Students of the Manya Krobo Senior High School in the Eastern Region have responded positively to calls from the Eastern Regional Blood Bank and MTN Ghana to help save lives by donating blood to the blood Bank in the region.

The students who were passionate about the exercise noted that it is in the right direction to help save lives.

According to the students, it is necessary that everyone shows readiness and compassion towards blood donation.

The telecommunication giants, as part of events marking this year's Valentine’s Day celebrations, embarked on a nationwide blood donation drive to support the National Blood Service in restocking the country’s blood supply, seeking to collect approximately 6,100 units of blood.

The project known as, “Save a Life,” encourages people to celebrate love meaningfully by donating blood to help save lives. Initially launched as an MTN staff initiative, the exercise has since expanded to include business partners, agencies, and the general public.

Speaking at the event, Ransford Gyan, the Area Sales Manager for the Eastern, Volta, and Oti Regions, articulated that the MTN Foundation stays committed to donating blood to support blood banks at all levels.

According to him, MTN targets over 6,100 pints of blood across all the sixteen regions in this year’s edition of the ‘Save A Life’ blood donation exercise in the country.

He extolled the voluntary blood donors for partaking in the exercise, adding that the exercise was with the collaboration of the Eastern Regional Blood Bank, adding that meeting the target was crucial towards addressing issues of blood shortage.

According to him, though the exercise was initially limited to only staff of MTN, it has since been opened to the larger society.

"It is our belief that we will get the target set this year to assist in easing the country's blood shortage," he said.

On her part, the Eastern Regional Blood Bank Donor Organizer at the Eastern Regional Hospital, Miss Philomina Quayson asserting that blood remains an essential commodity in health dispensation, noted that blood donation is critical in the treatment of accident patients, surgeries and other medical conditions.

She dispelled myths surrounding blood donation and urged members of the general public who are 17 years and free of any medical conditions including sickle cell and hypertension to donate blood to save lives.

Madam Quayson, expressed gratitude to the MTN team for embarking on the blood donation exercise to save lives and expressed her gratitude to the management of the Manya Krobo Senior High School for backing the life-saving effort by the MTN Ghana.

The students appealed to their own colleagues to partake in their exercise as it intends to save people in critical conditions.

They urged other students to also actively take part in such social activities in order to help them become better and responsible adults.

Last year, MTN Ghana’s blood donation drive resulted in over 5,000 units of blood being contributed to the National Blood Bank. This year, the company aims to surpass that figure, ensuring that hospitals have enough supply to meet patient needs.
