Because there isn't any business for members to discuss, Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin has adjourned the House indefinitely.
After the Business Committee failed to convene and create the required agenda for parliamentary deliberations, this decision was made. The Majority caucus had called the recall meeting, which was supposed to cover a number of important topics. Speaker Bagbin, however, was disappointed that the Majority caucus did not show up in the Chamber, stating that their absence caused the proceedings to stagnate.
Bagbin emphasized in his speech to the House that the session could not go forward as scheduled in the absence of committee input and an agenda. There is no order paper for today because the business committee was unable to meet because the individuals who sought the recall were not there, and the items they wanted us to handle—which I acknowledged for the business committee's consideration—are not on it.
As you can see, the house is entirely empty on one side. Because of this, even though we have a quorum to sit, we don't have any business to do. Without that, no other authority has the power to provide you with business that you haven't chosen to conduct. We are forced to postpone the house meeting once more due to the business committee's inability to convene, which was caused by the refusal of those who asked for a recall to appear. It is not wise to be adjourning on a daily basis given the difficulties we are currently facing.
Therefore, I'll go ahead and adjourn the meeting indefinitely once more," he said. Tensions between the Majority and Minority caucuses have been affecting legislative processes in recent weeks, and this most recent adjournment comes amid those tensions. The legislative agenda for this session is in flux because it is unclear when Parliament will meet again to discuss the matters that have stalled due to the extended postponement.
