A Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter has tragically crashed near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region, with several occupants feared dead. The incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

Eyewitnesses say the aircraft, which was reportedly en route from Accra to Obuasi, went down after crashing into a tree and bursting into flames. The chopper was burned beyond recognition.

According to Matthew Baah, the Assembly Member for the area, the community was alerted when a loud crash was followed by silence. “I was on my farm when I received a call. Residents who arrived at the crash site found the helicopter engulfed in flames,” he recounted in an interview with Adom FM.

Preliminary reports indicate that dismembered human remains were found at the scene, suggesting fatalities. The exact number and identities of the victims have not yet been officially confirmed. However, the Ghana Armed Forces has released a statement confirming that the missing aircraft had a total of eight people on board — three crew members and five passengers.

The passengers were reportedly en route to Obuasi to attend the launch of the government’s flagship Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP). The initiative, championed by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, aims to transform Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector.

rCOMSDEP is set to reform and consolidate existing initiatives such as the Community Mining Scheme (CMS) and the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme (NAELP), with a focus on establishing regulated, community-owned mining cooperatives. These cooperatives will benefit from formal training, legal concessions, and modern facilities for gold recovery and water treatment.

While investigations are ongoing, early suggestions point to poor weather conditions as a possible factor in the crash. The Ghana Armed Forces has stated that the helicopter disappeared from its radar during the flight.

Authorities are expected to release further details as investigations progress.
