Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has defended his endorsement of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, despite criticism from some quarters, including Movement for Change flagbearer Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen.
Speaking during a campaign event at the Ofori Panin Palace in Abuakwa South on November 27, Mr Kufuor dismissed calls to remain neutral due to his status as a statesman. He insisted that his experience and wisdom grant him the authority to express opinions on national matters.
“I am facing criticism for speaking my mind because I am considered a statesman, but experience and wisdom often come with age,” Kufuor stated, emphasizing his deep connection to the NPP. “The NPP is my political family, and it was through this party that I became president. Additionally, my ‘child,’ Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has been chosen by the party to lead.”
Reflecting on Dr Bawumia’s contributions to Ghana’s economic recovery during his presidency, Mr Kufuor commended his competence.
“During my tenure, Dr Bawumia was part of the Bank of Ghana team that worked tirelessly to stabilize the economy during a time of financial distress. Their efforts were pivotal in reviving Ghana’s economic fortunes,” he said.
Mr. Kufuor called on Ghanaians to support the NPP in the 2024 elections, citing Dr. Bawumia’s leadership as a key factor for national development.
Despite the backlash, the former president stood firm in his endorsement, reiterating his confidence in Dr Bawumia’s ability to lead the nation forward.
