The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not contest the upcoming Tamale Central Parliamentary by-election, following the death of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Alhaji Hon. Dr Murtala Mohammed, in a helicopter crash on 6 August 2025.

In a statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party said the decision was reached at a National Steering Committee meeting on Monday, 11 August 2025, in line with Article 10(10)(1) of the party’s constitution.
The NPP explained that it considered several factors before arriving at its decision, including the circumstances under which the seat became vacant and the risk of further polarisation in the country. It stressed that subjecting the nation to a competitive process so soon after the tragic loss would be “inhumane and unconscionable,” noting that by-elections often generate tension and acrimony.
According to the statement, the party believes the most fitting tribute to the late MP is not only to continue the fight against illegal mining but also to ensure a “smooth and peaceful replacement” for the good people of Tamale Central.
The NPP confirmed that when the Electoral Commission opens nominations in accordance with Article 112(5) of Ghana’s Constitution, it will refrain from participating in the contest “in accord with the national interest.”
