The National Peace Council will host a peace pact signing ceremony today, November 28, bringing together representatives from all political parties and their presidential candidates contesting the December 7 elections. The initiative aims to ensure a peaceful electoral process by binding candidates to uphold peace and conduct campaigns that foster national unity and stability.
Speaking to Citi FM, the Chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, expressed optimism about the participation of all political parties.
“So far, we believe that all the parties will be there. We have received commitments from all of them. A copy of the pact has been sent to each party for review, and we’ve not received any adverse feedback. Preparations are underway for the logistics needed to facilitate the signing ceremony,” he said.
However, uncertainty surrounds the participation of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). The party’s chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has previously stated that the NDC’s involvement hinges on meeting certain conditions.
The NDC has called for the inclusion of key government officials such as the President, the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief Justice, the National Security Coordinator, and the Attorney-General in the peace pact.
As of now, it remains unclear whether any NDC representatives will attend today’s ceremony. The signing of the peace pact is a critical step in fostering a peaceful and transparent electoral process for Ghana’s 2024 general elections.
