Former Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has cast doubt on Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s emotional connection to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an exclusive interview with JoyNews, Prof Frimpong-Boateng remarked that Dr Bawumia, who was not originally a member of the party, was met with resistance from some prominent NPP figures, including former President John Agyekum Kufuor, during his selection as the running mate to then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo.

“Dr. Bawumia is a very nice person, but I don’t see him as someone who has a deep emotional attachment to the NPP,” Prof Frimpong-Boateng stated. He added that while Dr Bawumia was initially hailed as an economic expert, he has failed to meet the economic expectations of many Ghanaians.

Although Prof Frimpong-Boateng said he did not object to Dr Bawumia’s selection as running mate, he lamented the unfulfilled expectations tied to his role. He also criticized the recent process that led to Dr. Bawumia’s emergence as the NPP’s flagbearer, alleging undue influence over party delegates.

“Delegates were manipulated during the selection process. Some were intimidated, others had their arms twisted, and those who were corrupt were bribed to vote for Dr Bawumia,” he alleged.

Prof Frimpong-Boateng expressed concern over the current state of the NPP, describing it as fragmented and lacking the unity and integrity that once defined the party. He revealed his disconnection from the NPP, particularly after four party members implicated in his report on environmental violations took legal action against him.

Reflecting on the NPP he once knew, Prof Frimpong-Boateng highlighted that the party used to champion principles such as the rule of law and the separation of powers. He lamented that these values are no longer evident under the current leadership, further deepening his disillusionment with the party.
