As Ghana celebrates 60 years of the Cedi, Prophet Moses Bennisan, founder and head pastor of Family Altar Ministry, has called on all Ghanaians to “Respect the Cedi.” The Ghana cedi was first issued on July 19, 1965 to replace the British pound system, serving as a symbol of national sovereignty.
As part of this milestone, the Bank of Ghana has launched the Cedi@60 campaign to foster public education on proper currency use and restore confidence in the Cedi through exhibitions, community outreach and financial literacy programs.
Amid the celebrations, Prophet Bennisan has emphasized the importance of treating Cedi notes with same care usually ascribed to foreign currency. He further stressed the importance of quoting prices of goods and services in Cedis as this reinforces its legitimacy as a legal tender of the country. Prophet Bennisan recalls a conversation with a friend in New Zealand, who observed that Ghanaians respect foreign currency but often mishandle their own currency. He warned that without changing this attitude, the Cedi’s strength and ultimately, Ghana’s economic growth would be at risk.
Prophet Bennisan further stressed that valuing our currency is essential to stability. He summed it up by saying, “The Ghana we want is a Ghana with a strong Cedi.” His message is clear and simple; by handling notes neatly, trading in Cedis and supporting policies that maintain currency stability, Ghanaians can all contribute to a stronger national economy and collective pride. He believes we all have a collective responsibility in shaping Ghana’s financial future as this can help build a more stable and respected economic identity.
Prophet Moses Bennisan is a passionate nationalist and a keen observer of Ghana’s socio-economic landscape. He is the author of several books including “Ghana’s Economic Emergence” which talks about how the challenges faced by Ghanaians can be addressed through thoughtful policies.
