Mon, 28 Oct 2024 Source: Manteaw Amos

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) released the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results on October 19, 2024. Many students are struggling with how to calculate their aggregate to use as a guide for applying for further education.

Aggregate calculation requires attention to specific areas.

How to check your BECE aggregate

The BECE aggregate score is the sum of your best three grades in core subjects and your best three grades in elective subjects, making a total of six grades. The selection process involves choosing three of the best grades from your core subjects and three from the elective subjects.

The core subjects include English Language, Mathematics, General Science, and Social Studies. However, English and Mathematics are paramount in the calculation process.

Elective subjects include Religious and Moral Education, Career Technology, Creative Arts & Design, Ghanaian Language, French, and Computing.

Example on how to calculate

For example, Emmanuella Apovi from Bankyese Basic Primary A and B obtained the following results:

• English Language: 2

• Social Studies: 3

• Mathematics: 1

• Integrated Science: 3

• Career Technology: 4

• French: 6

• Asante Twi: 1

• Creative Arts & Design: 1

• Religious and Moral Education: 2

To calculate Emmanuella's aggregate, you need to select three of her best results from the four core subjects and another three best from the elective subjects.

Looking at her results, the best in the core subjects are English (2), Mathematics (1), and Social Studies (3). So, the calculation for core subjects will be:

• English: 2

• Mathematics: 1

• Social Studies: 3

Total for Core Subjects = 2 + 1 + 3 = 6

Now, let’s calculate for her electives. The best three in her electives are Creative Arts & Design (1), Asante Twi (1), and Religious and Moral Education (2). So, the calculation for elective subjects will be:

• Creative Arts & Design: 1

• Asante Twi: 1

• Religious and Moral Education: 2

Total for Elective Subjects = 1 + 1 + 2 = 4

So, the overall aggregate is:

• Core Subjects: 6

• Elective Subjects: 4

Total Aggregate = 6 + 4 = 10

Therefore, Emmanuella's grade is an aggregate of 10
