Baba Yara Stadium needs improvements

With a capacity of around 40,528 people, Baba Yara Sports Stadium is actually Ghana’s largest live-sports venue. That should, in theory, make it the perfect spot to host flagship international events or not.

The CAF recently inspected Baba Yara and found a whole bunch of issues. Most notably, they deemed the playing surface uneven, which automatically made it ineligible to host any matches.

Yet, this is only the tip of the iceberg. The CAF also found “bad drainage” and “poor grass cover” while investigating the conditions. As a result, previously scheduled qualifying matches need to be moved.

Where will they be moved, you ask? There currently isn’t an answer. Ghana’s is not teeming with live-sports venues. There has instead been talk of moving the national team’s CAF qualifying matches to outside the countries, in neutral territories.

Given how deeply Ghana citizens care about the sport, not to mention the momentum that built up for the national team during the World Cup, it would be fair to call this a disastrous scenario.
