Bribe, Nation Wrecker and Arrest : Why Chairman Wontumi is fighting COP Kofi Boakye

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has issued a series of warnings to retired Commissioner of Police (COP) Nathan Kofi Boakye.

Chairman Wontumi has threatened to place COP Boakye under a citizen’s arrest, accusing him of training members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to cause disturbances in the Ashanti Region during the upcoming December elections.

Speaking in an interview on his Wontumi Radio on September 18, 2024, Chairman Wontumi declared, “Kofi Boakye, if there is any disturbance here, we will hold you responsible.

"This place belongs to us. You were lobbying for the IGP position in an NPP government, and today you are the one training NDC mercenaries to perpetrate violence. I am going to deal with you. I am stronger than you, I will deal with you, Kofi Boakye.”

He further urged the public to arrest COP Boakye if they encounter him, promising to hand him over to the police. This statement was a reaction to a nationwide demonstration by the NDC, demanding a forensic audit of the voter register ahead of the December 7 general elections.

This is not the first time Chairman Wontumi has targeted COP Kofi Boakye. In a previous warning, he accused the retired police officer of collaborating with the NDC to incite violence during the elections. He alleged that the NDC plans to recruit individuals to disrupt the electoral process, but assured that such strategies would not succeed.

Chairman Wontumi emphasized that any act of violence on election day would result in severe consequences for COP Boakye. “Those who are being bribed by the NDC to instigate violence should forget about it because they cannot do anything. Kofi Boakye was a COP here, but I showed him something small. That man is a nation wrecker. So, those who have been hired, I want you to know that if a single gunshot is fired, I will banish Kofi Boakye from the Ashanti Region,” he stated during a campaign rally.
