Two philanthropists and senior police officers have extended a helping hand to a junior high school (JHS) student of the Bakpa Avedo DA Basic School in the Bakpa Avedo Circuit of the Volta Region.

They presented a bicycle, stationery and other educational materials to Bethel Amedza, a JHS Three student of the school.

The donation was made by the Head of the Psychology Department of the Ghana Police Hospital, Superintendent of Police (Supt) Dr Foster Nanewortor and his wife, Cadet Officer (C/O) Ms Alice Lawson.

They were made during the beginning of the 2026/2027 academic year as part of efforts to encourage Bethel Amedza who usually walks about seven kilometres from her village to access education everyday.

The donation also forms part of the couple's broader efforts to ease the financial strain on Bethel’s family, and encourage other students to put in a lot of efforts in their studies.

Presenting the items, Dr Nanewortor, who is also a professional counsellor, said he and his wife were inspired by Bethel’s story and quickly mobilised to come to her aid.

"As a community, we must do everything to encourage people like Bethel to aspire higher to achieve more for society. I want to use this opportunity to call on other benevolent individuals and organisations to come and support people like these because she has proven that distance cannot stop a child with a dream," he said.

Appreciation

Present at the brief ceremony were the parents of Bethel, Mr and Mrs Amedza, the headmaster, Mr Eric Videdu and the Chairman of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Mr David Adzokatse.

The School Improvement Support Officer (SISO), Mr Emmanuel Wogbe Klukpuie, expressed appreciation to the philanthropists for the gesture, noting that it would go a long way to encourage others to take their studies seriously.

"Her hard work recently earned her 3rd place in the Inter-School Spelling Competition, where she represented her school with pride. Together with two other learners, she also won Gold in an Inter-School Bible Quiz Competition.

"Bethel’s story is a beautiful reminder that success is built on courage, commitment and perseverance," he added.

Mr Videdu appealed for public support to complete a stalled library project for the school.

While expressing appreciation for the kind gesture, Bethel said she had been inspired by the donation, and that would encourage her to do more.
