Parents have been encouraged to redefine the true meaning of love by investing more time, care and emotional support in their children rather than focusing solely on providing material possessions.
This call was made by Samuel Obiri Aduama (Nana Obiri Aduama I), Chief Executive Officer of Adville Hotels and Resorts Company Limited and Nkosohene of the Oguaa Traditional Area, in a thought-provoking reflection titled "Some Children Are Crying Over What They Shouldn't: The True Inheritance of Parental Love."
According to him, society is increasingly witnessing a generation of children whose desires are centred on expensive mobile phones, designer clothing and money to match the lifestyles of their peers. He noted that while many parents work tirelessly to satisfy these material demands, the greatest need of every child is often neglected—the presence and affection of their parents.
Mr. Aduama observed that the most painful form of childhood deprivation is not the absence of material wealth but the absence of meaningful parental relationships.
He explained that a child who receives every material gift but lacks quality time, encouragement and emotional connection with parents suffers a loss that no amount of money can replace.
"Your child will forget the toy you bought, but never the moment you gave," he stated, underscoring the enduring value of parental presence over possessions.
He further emphasised that genuine love is not expressed through financial transactions alone but through consistent acts of care such as sharing family meals, praying together, telling bedtime stories, attending school events and listening attentively when children face challenges.
According to him, these everyday moments are the true treasures that shape children's character, build their confidence and prepare them for a purposeful future.
Mr. Aduama appealed to parents not to allow the pursuit of wealth and economic success to come at the expense of family relationships.
He also encouraged children to appreciate the enduring value of parental love rather than becoming consumed by temporary material possessions.
He concluded by calling on families and society to raise a generation that values love, character and lasting relationships above material wealth.
Advocacy Perspective
As Ghana continues to confront growing concerns over youth indiscipline, mental health challenges, substance abuse and declining family cohesion, experts increasingly recognise that the home remains the first and most influential institution in shaping responsible citizens. While providing food, clothing and education is essential, children also require emotional security, positive role models and meaningful engagement from parents to thrive.
Promoting positive parenting, family bonding and values-based upbringing is therefore critical to building resilient families and nurturing a generation equipped with integrity, compassion and responsible leadership. Communities, religious institutions, schools and policymakers must continue to champion initiatives that encourage parents to spend quality time with their children, recognising that the greatest inheritance a child can receive is not material wealth, but love, guidance and lasting values.
