George Quaye, President of the Arts and Tourism Writers Association of Ghana (ATWAG) and founder of Image Bureau, visited the construction site of the ambitious Ghana Trade Fair redevelopment project, which aims to transform the venue into a world-class multipurpose facility.
Dr. Agnes Adu, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Trade Fair Limited, led Mr. George Quaye and a section of the media on a detailed tour of the site.
She provided insights into the project’s timeline, scope, and anticipated impact, emphasizing its alignment with international standards seen in iconic venues like London’s O2 Arena and New York’s Javits Center.
A Vision for Ghana’s Economic and Cultural Growth
The redevelopment project is set to introduce a host of modern amenities, including a state-of-the-art convention and exhibition centre, hotel, conference halls, restaurants, retail spaces, and a dedicated area for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
According to Dr. Adu, the new facility will span approximately 20,000 square meters of indoor space and include multipurpose halls capable of hosting large-scale events.
“We are building the major convention centre in Ghana, which sits on about 20,000 to 30,000 square meters of indoor space. Properly serviced, air-conditioned, just like you see at the O2 Arena or the Javits Centre in New York,” Dr. Adu explained.
She highlighted the versatility of the new facility, stating, “The exhibition hall and convention centre floor measure 10,000 square meters, allowing for configurations that can accommodate up to 30,000 people in a standing-room-only setup. The space can also be adapted for seated events, weddings, or stadium seating.”
The project also includes a grand lobby spanning 5,000 square meters, equipped with a restaurant, a gift shop showcasing made-in-Ghana products, a Forex bureau, and additional support facilities.
Boosting Regional and International Trade
Dr. Adu emphasized that the redevelopment is poised to position the Ghana Trade Fair as a leading destination for regional and international events, enhancing Ghana’s economic and cultural landscape. “This facility will elevate Accra to a global stage, enabling the country to host world-class events while supporting local businesses and tourism,” she noted.
The redevelopment also reflects Ghana’s broader economic vision, aligning with President Kwame Nkrumah’s initial intent for the trade fair to stimulate international trade and foster pan-African unity.
Progress and Timeline
Construction began in 2020, with significant infrastructure such as roads, power, and drainage already completed. Despite interruptions between 2020 and 2022, work has resumed in earnest, with multiple contractors on site.
Dr. Adu disclosed that the project is expected to be completed within three years. “We have addressed all the foundational needs and are now focused on constructing the convention and exhibition centre. This project will redefine the standards for event hosting in Ghana and beyond,” she said.
