Following a mysterious social media post that many took to be a criticism of recently appointed President John Dramani Mahama, Ghanaian musician Sarkodie has recently come under fire.
When Sarkodie wrote, "Back to Gari soakings like we never left," on his Instagram story on January 8, 2025, it provoked a lot of discussion and conjecture among fans and the general public.
Due to its affordability, the term "Gari soakings" describes a common Ghanaian dish made from soaked gari (cassava flakes), which is frequently connected to financial difficulty. A lot of people thought Sarkodie's remark implied a return to more difficult economic circumstances and was a hidden jab at President Mahama's return to office.
In response, some social media users have accused Sarkodie of hypocrisy, citing his prior usage of music to vocally criticize Mahama's government from 2013 to 2016 but being mostly quiet during the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration from 2017 to 2024. Allegations of political prejudice have resulted from this apparent discrepancy, with some conjecturing that he is affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
