John Dumelo, the candidate for parliament in the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat, expressed concern on Facebook about a purported incident involving the incumbent MP and a security guard at the University of Ghana in Legon. Dumelo claims that the security guard was intimidated by the current MP after he declared on a video that the MP's distribution of rice and oil would not affect his vote.
According to reports, the officer who was heard on camera voicing his opinions about the assistance distribution is under pressure to take back his remarks or risk repercussions, which might include losing his job. Dumelo denounced what he called "intimidation," and he called on the academic community and voters to resist such oppressive practices. "I have received reports that the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon has met and allegedly threatened a security officer at the University of Ghana, Legon," Dumelo stated in the message. "The officer, seen in a video stating that the rice and oil distributed by the MP would not influence his vote, is reportedly being pressured to retract his statement or risk losing his job."
In his statement, Dumelo, who is vying for the same seat, condemned such strategies and urged people to resist intimidation and defend their right to a free and fair election. He stressed that there should be no political pressure and that the university should be a place for unfettered discussion and idea sharing. "This is a university community, and individuals must have the courage to stand against oppression," Dumelo said, urging everyone to be on guard and make sure that fear doesn't dampen their voices.
Dumelo's article has spurred conversations about the role of intimidation in politics and the significance of defending democratic rights as tensions increase in the run-up to the elections. Although it is unclear how this will play out, it is obvious that Dumelo is using his position to draw attention to concerns about electoral fairness and transparency.
