Assin Central's vocal member of parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has made a daring claim about the NPP's prospects in the general elections scheduled for 2024. Agyapong claimed during a recent campaign event that the NPP is already headed for defeat and blamed the anticipated loss on Ghana's persistent economic difficulties, especially after 2022.
Agyapong, who is renowned for his direct criticism, said, "The New Patriotic Party has already lost the 2024 election," according to Ghanaweb. The fall of the Ghanaian cedi in 2022 caused the election to be lost, impacting both regular individuals and businesspeople. He cited inflation, the sharp decline in the value of the cedi, and the growing cost of living as the main causes that have had a significant impact on the state of the economy. According to the MP, the NPP has lost a lot of support and credibility as a result of these problems.
The MP for Assin Central stressed that the general economic suffering endured by common Ghanaians will directly affect the political environment. Agyapong asserts that people's political judgments are frequently influenced by their frustration and disillusionment when they are having difficulty making ends meet. When people's livelihoods are in danger, they take action by voting, he added, adding that such suffering frequently causes voters to turn against the ruling party.
According to Agyapong's remarks, the electorate is becoming increasingly dissatisfied, and many of them are inclined to vote for change. The NPP will have a difficult time winning back the public's trust and resolving voters' economic complaints as the 2024 elections approach. These feelings could influence the political outcome in the upcoming months, and the opposition parties are well-positioned to take advantage of them.
