President Akufo-Addo is accused by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of conspiring to rig the 2024 Ashanti Region election in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The NDC claims that Akufo-Addo has given Brig. Gen. Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the responsibility of carrying out the plan.
These assertions were made by NDC National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi during a news conference on Tuesday, just eighteen days before the election on December 7. Gyamfi asserted that Brigadier General Opoku was just elevated to his current role as part of the purported plan.
He asserted that Akufo-Addo had given Brigadier General Michael Opoku the responsibility of carrying out a carefully thought-out plan created by the NPP to rig the next elections, especially in the Ashanti Region, by stuffing ballots, switching ballot boxes, switching pink sheets, and engaging in other covert actions beginning with the special voting exercise set for December 2 of this year. He went on to say that the military officer should have received criticism for his involvement in the violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, but instead he received a promotion.
Additionally, he said that the officer had been promised the Chief of Defense Staff post in the event that the NPP won the 2024 election. "Brigadier General Opoku has promised to do whatever it takes to carry out his shady election-rigging scheme in exchange for the position of Chief of Defence Staff in the unlikely event that the NPP wins the 2024 election," he added, adding that he has moved his family to the UK.
Additionally, Mr. Gyamfi claimed that the NDC had learned that Brigadier General Opoku was using the Asutuare military barracks to train NPP goons. "On election day, Brigadier General Opoku intends to outfit these bandits in military garb so they can commit acts of violence against NDC agents, supporters, and defenseless civilians."
