Pastor Mensa Otabil, the founder and leader of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), has come under heavy fire from Blessed Godsbrain Smart, also known as Captain Smart, who hosts Onua Maakye on Onua TV. Speaking on his morning show, Captain Smart said he was disappointed by what he called Pastor Otabil's lack of response to the country's urgent economic problems.

Captain Smart noted that Pastor Otabil was a vocal critic of the government during the 2013 administration of John Mahama. He noted that the pastor gave multiple news conferences during a period when the dollar to cedi exchange rate was approximately 3 cedis, and he also questioned the administration's economic management. Even though the exchange rate is currently at 16.5 cedis and the economy is in terrible shape, Captain Smart claims that Pastor Otabil has been noticeably silent under the present administration.

The vocal reporter even went so far as to charge Pastor Otabil with hypocrisy, implying that his silence may have been driven by political considerations. He maintained that, considering the current status of the economy, leaders who had previously publicly denounced past administrations have a moral duty to do the same with the current one. Captain Smart threatened to publicly expose Pastor Otabil in the days ahead if he did not speak out against the status quo. His comments have fueled continuing public discussions over the function of religious leaders in addressing societal issues and holding governments responsible.
