Regarding the recent events in Parliament, former President John Agyekum Kufuor addressed a daring message to Speaker Alban Kingsford Bagbin. Former President Kufuor said in an interview with Asempa FM that the Speaker's choices will determine whether Parliament is peaceful or chaotic.
He clarified that recent actions by Alban Bagbin have exacerbated the differences between the NDC and NPP factions in Parliament. The Speaker's actions are not good for the nation, he said, with only one month until the elections. Since January is when transitions occur, Kufuor underlined that Parliament must be really active during this time. President Akufo-Addo will step down, he said, and a new leader would assume power. Akufo-Addo is also scheduled to give his farewell speech to Parliament around this time frame before President steps down in 2025.
Therefore, he is pleading with the Speaker of Parliament to reevaluate some of his choices, particularly in light of these pressing circumstances.
This follows the November 7, 2024, indefinite adjournment of Parliament by Speaker Alban Bagbin. This was the second recent adjournment brought on by a quorum, which is the bare minimum of members needed to convene a meeting.
Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were not present in Parliament when it met on November 7. There wouldn't have been enough members to carry on business without them. Speaking to the MPs in attendance, Speaker Bagbin said that no parliamentary business could be conducted because the NPP MPs were not there. The Business Committee, which is in charge of establishing the agenda, has not brought forward any fresh items for the day, the Speaker added. Parliament consequently had nothing to debate, which resulted in yet another extended adjournment.
