There is brewing tension between occupants of a resettlement community in the Okere District of the Eastern Region and the indigene of Awukugua over who owns the VRA Quarters land.

The attack happened when the chief and residents gathered to witnessed the lunch of “Ebefura 2025” when a fully armed gang from Awukugua invaded the town with sporadic shootings, wailing of weapons and assaulted some elderly residents of Adukrom VRA Quarters today.

The elders and opinion leaders added that they are now living fears as they cannot predict the next move from the chiefs of Awukugua.

The chief and residents of Adukrom VRA Quarters say they are constantly under siege from the traditional authorities and people of their host community to vacate the current location and are also being prevented from undertaking any developmental projects in the communities.

The current occupants of the Adukrom VRA Quarters resettlement community said they were relocated to their current location in 1964 during the construction of the Akosombo Dam.

The affected residents say several engagements with the Volta River Authority (VRA) to intervene in the matter have so far proven futile.

The chief of Adukrom VRA Quarters, Nana Obiri Asare Atakorah iii who doubles as the Adukrom Mponuahene urged the Government, the Okere District Assembly and the Volta River Authority (VRA) to be more proactive in engaging the leadership of hosts and settler communities, for an amicable resolution of land disputes.

He said there has been raging antagonism between host landowners and resettled communities in some parts of the country and particularly the Okere District of the Eastern region, after the construction of the Akosombo Dam in 1960.
