The Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, has raised concerns over persistent power outages, commonly referred to as “dumsor,” which she says are severely affecting economic activities in the constituency.

In an interview with GhanaWeb journalist Eric Obeng Boateng, the lawmaker described the situation as worrying, noting that several communities have experienced prolonged periods without electricity, disrupting businesses and daily life.

Hon. Joana Gyan Cudjoe expressed frustration that despite the constituency’s support for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), the area continues to face significant infrastructure challenges, particularly in the energy sector.

According to her, the unreliable power supply has not only affected commercial and industrial activities but has also created security concerns in parts of the district.

She further indicated that although key political leaders, including the President, the MP, and the District Chief Executive, are aligned politically, residents are yet to fully benefit from improved development and infrastructure.

Describing Amenfi Central as one of the struggling constituencies in the country, she cited poor road networks, unstable telecommunications services, and inconsistent electricity as major obstacles to growth.

Amenfi Central remains an important agricultural area, contributing significantly to Ghana’s cocoa and oil palm production, with a population of over 115,000 people based on the 2021 Population and Housing Census.

Despite its economic importance, the constituency faces a shortage of social amenities, including limited access to secondary education facilities.

The MP noted that within her first year in office, she has supported development efforts through her foundation by providing medical equipment, offering scholarships to students, improving access to clean water, and installing streetlights to enhance security.

However, she emphasised that such interventions cannot replace government responsibility, and called for increased investment and urgent action to address the challenges facing Amenfi Central.
