‎The National Democratic Congress (NDC) did not participate in the Akwatia by-election out of oversight, but as a deliberate strategy to expose alleged electoral malpractices by the Electoral Commission (EC) and the previous government New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2024 general election, according to NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

‎Speaking to party supporters and residents during his thanksgiving tour in the Okere Constituency of the Eastern Region, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito, clarified the party's stance on the past Akwatia mini-poll, widely anticipated for 2025, stating it forms part of a broader strategy against what the NDC perceives as a fraudulent electoral system.

‎"We didn't pull out from context at the Akwatia by-election in 2025 because we want to expose the Electoral Commission and the NPP for rigging the 2024 general election in favor of their candidates," Johnson Asiedu Nketia asserted to a cheering crowd. "Our participation is a strategic decision to shine a light on the rigging mechanisms we believe were employed in the last general election."

‎The NDC chairman's remarks reiterate the party's long-standing concerns about the integrity of Ghana's electoral processes, particularly following the 2024 general election which they claim was heavily manipulated. The NDC has consistently accused the EC of bias and the NPP of collaborating to subvert the will of the people.

‎According to Asiedu Nketia, the Akwatia by-election, serve as a crucial platform for the NDC to gather evidence and demonstrate to the Ghanaian public the alleged flaws and deliberate manipulations within the electoral system. He indicated that the party would be vigilant and meticulously document every aspect of the process.

‎"We went into this by-election with our eyes wide open," he stated. "Every step, every action by the EC officials and the NPP was scrutinized. We want to show Ghanaians exactly how they allegedly rig elections so that the same tactics cannot be used against us in future major polls."

‎Asiedu Nketia's current tour of the Eastern Region is part of a series of engagements aimed at thanking party members for their support and galvanizing the grassroots ahead of future electoral contests.

‎The Electoral Commission and the New Patriotic Party have consistently denied allegations of rigging, maintaining that the 2024 general election was free, fair, and transparent. However, Nketia's latest pronouncement suggests that the battle over electoral integrity remains a central theme for the NDC, with future by-elections potentially becoming battlegrounds for exposing alleged systemic flaws.
