Joana hails from a royal lineage in Wassa Agona Amenfi and was raised with a deep sense of duty and service. She was nurtured by her mother, Agnes Nyarko, a successful trader and farmer, and her father, Ambrose Kojo Gyan, a distinguished supplier of foodstuffs to government hospitals. Upon his retirement, her father ventured into palm wine tapping, a profession he greatly enjoyed until his passing. These formative influences instilled in Joana a strong work ethic, a deep commitment to her community, and an unwavering dedication to excellence in all her pursuits.

Joana's academic journey reflects her dedication to knowledge and professional growth. She started her education at Agona Methodist School and Denkyira Asikuma for her Junior Secondary School. Her secondary education was completed at Dunkwa Secondary Technical School in Dunkwa on Offin. She holds a Diploma in Security and Intelligence from the Doyen Institute of Intelligence and Investigations and has obtained certificate in Information Technology at Work Place from IPMC. Additionally, she is currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science with Business Management at IPMC and another Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at GIMPA. Her diverse educational background equips her with the strategic insights needed to navigate the complexities of both governance and business.

Joana is an award-winning entrepreneur with over 20 years of experience in the mining sector, where she has gained widespread respect for her accomplishments in an industry traditionally dominated by men. She is also a prominent figure in gold trading and export, holding the distinction of being the only female licensed gold exporter in Ghana, and has successfully managed to raise over four hundred million dollars in the sector. Through her leadership, she has emerged as a recognized catalyst for change, earning the nicknames "Small Gaddafi" and "Yaa Asantewaa" for her resilience and remarkable success. Joana’s work in mining is focused on sustainability, community empowerment, and job creation. Her business ventures are not only geared towards generating wealth but are also dedicated to improving the lives of her people, particularly those in Amenfi Central.

In her political career, Joana has established herself as a powerful voice for her community. She serves as the National Coordinator for the Women's Working Committee, the Finance and Economic Committee, and the Entrepreneurship and Business Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In her capacity as the Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, Joana has championed critical initiatives that address the region’s most pressing issues, from education and healthcare to infrastructure and economic development.

Joana's philanthropic work reflects her unwavering commitment to public service and community development. Through the Joana Gyan Foundation, she has funded numerous projects that directly benefit the people of Amenfi Central. Her initiatives include drilling over 60 mechanized boreholes to alleviate water scarcity, constructing school buildings, providing scholarships, and supporting health services—such as funding life-saving surgeries for individuals in need. The foundation’s “Big Push” campaign is dedicated to raising significant funds to further these efforts, with a focus on long-term, sustainable development in the region.

An advocate for women’s empowerment, Joana has provided seed funding to women’s groups, enabling them to achieve financial independence and self-reliance. She is also committed to youth development, having sponsored sports competitions, provided educational resources, and created employment opportunities in Amenfi Central.
