On Tuesday, January 14, the Volta Region was ablaze with festivities as Hon. James Gunu was named the new Regional Minister.
Residents have praised the nomination as a resounding indication of President Mahama's dedication to developing strong, grassroots leadership and meeting the region's development needs.
Mr. James Gunu, a devoted member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a proud son of the Volta Region, is hailed as a development advocate, a unifier, and a visionary leader. He has gained the respect and admiration of people in the area and beyond because of his outstanding leadership abilities, strong commitment to community empowerment, and unrelenting devotion to advancement.
People from towns in the area, including Akatsi, Sogakope, Ho, Keta, Aflao, and a few more, flocked to the streets to celebrate the news with lively drumming, singing, and traditional dances. The excitement was evident in Ho, the provincial capital, when community people and youth groups expressed their joy.
Cecilia Agbenyega, a vendor at the Ho central market, expressed her opinions among the enthusiastic crowd: "James Gunu has always been a man of the people." He is capable of enacting significant change and is aware of the difficulties we face.
The euphoria was no less palpable in Keta, where fishermen and community leaders described the appointment as a strategic move to prioritize development in the region. “We are hopeful that James Gunu will be a strong voice for the Volta Region and ensure we get our fair share of national resources,” said one of the fishermen.
Hon. James Gunu, who previously served as the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Akatsi North and later as the Volta Regional Secretary of the NDC, is no stranger to leadership. His tenure as DCE was marked by significant infrastructural development, youth empowerment programs, and a focus on education and healthcare.
Political analysts say his deep understanding of the region’s challenges and his close relationship with local communities make him an ideal candidate for the position.
The Volta Region, often referred to as the “world bank” of the NDC due to its overwhelming support for the party in elections, has consistently called for more development projects and government attention. With Mr. Gunu as the incoming Regional Minister, expectations are high that the region will see an increased focus on infrastructure, agriculture, jobs and education.
Traditional leaders have already pledged their support for Mr. Gunu, with chiefs across the region commending Mahama for the appointment.
