A fatal accident on the Accra-Kumasi highway has resulted in six deaths and numerous injuries. The incident occurred this afternoon in Atwedie, located in the Asante Akim South Municipality, when a Sprinter bus carrying both passengers and tomatoes collided head-on with a VIP bus traveling in the opposite direction.

An eyewitness informed Angel FM Kumasi that the Sprinter bus was speeding and tried to overtake another vehicle. During this dangerous attempt, the driver lost control and crashed directly into the VIP bus. The collision completely destroyed the Sprinter, and six people, including the driver, were killed instantly.

Many of the survivors sustained various injuries and were quickly taken to Juaso Government Hospital. Some in more serious condition were transferred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

Police officers arrived promptly to assist with the rescue operations and manage the traffic jams that had formed due to the accident. With help from bystanders, the road was eventually cleared after several hours.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has begun an investigation into the cause of the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that excessive speed and reckless overtaking played significant roles in the incident. Authorities are urging all road users to drive more carefully, especially on busy highways.
