The National Election Security Taskforce Chairman and Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has been instructed by President John Dramani Mahama to begin an inquiry into the election-related homicides that took place during the 2020 and 2024 elections right away.

In a message sent to Dr. George Akuffo Dampare on January 10, 2025, and signed by President's Secretary Dr. Callistus Mahama, the President stressed that these terrible deaths still undermine the country's democracy.

The statement emphasized the pressing necessity for the victims and their families to have justice as well as a comprehensive investigation.

Awutu Senya East in the Central Region, Techiman South in the Bono East Region, Savelugu in the Northern Region, and Ablekuma Central and Odododiodio in the Greater Accra Region were among the constituencies where violent incidents during the 2020 election claimed eight lives.

Similarly, six fatalities were reported by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) during the 2024 election in Tolon, Damongo, Awutu Senya East, and Ahafo Ano South West.

The president proposed five major changes to the IGP to guarantee a comprehensive investigation: Dedicated Investigative Taskforce:

To effectively resolve certain cases, the CID should form a specialized staff to work solely on them.

Working together with Families and Witnesses: Provide in-depth interviews with victims' relatives, eyewitnesses, and other pertinent parties.

Review of Election Security Measures: Evaluate the choices and actions made by the security guards stationed at the impacted polling places in order to spot any carelessness or participation.

Forensic Analysis: Examine tangible evidence, such as bullet casings and weapons, using sophisticated forensic techniques.

Engagement with Civic and Electoral Bodies: Work with the Electoral Commission and other organizations to examine 2020 and 2024 election reports in order to gain more information.

To maintain openness and public awareness, the president's secretary also encouraged the IGP to give regular updates on the investigations' progress.
