In a recent interview on February 5, 2025, Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, addressed a controversial remark made in Ghana’s Parliament. The comment, which referred to one of his colleagues as the “daughter of a murderer,” has sparked widespread outrage.
According to a report from Adom Online, Ayariga was informed about the incident while on his way to a media engagement. He revealed that a concerned individual had alerted him and even sent him a video of the exchange. However, he had not yet had the opportunity to review the footage.
“I received a call on my way to the studio from someone who reported the incident to me and actually sent me a video of it. However, I haven’t been able to watch the clip yet,” Ayariga explained.
Despite not having seen the video himself, Ayariga emphasized the seriousness of the issue and assured the public that it would be thoroughly investigated. “We will investigate it and take very stern action,” he stated, making it clear that such remarks would not be tolerated.
Maintaining Decorum in Parliament
The comment has intensified tensions between the Majority and Minority factions in Parliament, drawing renewed attention to the need for respectful discourse in legislative proceedings. Ayariga reiterated his commitment to upholding parliamentary decorum, stressing that MPs must be held accountable for their language and conduct.
“We must maintain decorum in our Parliament. Remarks like these are unacceptable and must be addressed with the seriousness they deserve,” he insisted.
The inflammatory nature of the remark has fueled public debate, with many calling for stricter enforcement of parliamentary rules regarding offensive language. As divisions within Parliament deepen, Ayariga’s response highlights the pressing need for accountability and mutual respect among lawmakers, regardless of their political affiliations.
