Following their victory in the 2024 elections, President John Dramani Mahama has warned National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters not to replicate the 2017 antics of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters.
At a presidential dinner at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), President Mahama voiced his alarm about rumors that some people were trying to seize control of government agencies, such as the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) in Tema.
"After losing the election in 2017, the NPP attacked government buildings, seized property, took over public restrooms and toll booths, and even seized cars on the street," Mahama said. "Such behavior must not be repeated by us."
In order to show that they are distinct from their political rivals, the President underlined that NDC supporters must behave appropriately.
He urged party officials to find and involve the young people who were instrumental in the party's triumph at the constituency and regional levels.
Mahama said, "I know our youth made considerable sacrifices for this victory, but instead of taking matters into their own hands—seizing warehouses or fertilizers—we must organize their energies in a productive way."
Law enforcement may have to intervene to keep vital state installations in order if there are any further disturbances, he added.
Mahama emphasized the significance of gaining the ongoing confidence of Ghanaians and exhorted supporters of the NDC to maintain peace and order as an indication of their willingness to govern responsibly.
"Let us demonstrate to Ghanaians our uniqueness. Let's honor the directive they gave us and not waste it on unruly behavior," he continued.
The President said that the situation was undesirable and unproductive, citing reports of people professing to be loyal to the NDC attempting to seize positions at the GPHA.
