Gold bars found at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) have been the subject of a challenge from Dr. Joseph Yamin, National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), to the Bank of Ghana to provide evidence.
Instead of providing the police with credible defenses, Dr. Yamin, the chair of the transition committee's asset retrieval task force, claims that the central bank and the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) are releasing statements criticizing him for being the team leader that intercepted the bullion van.
The police seized over 17 boxes of bullion bars on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, when a team led by Dr. Joseph Yamin intercepted the shipment that was allegedly ticketed for export to Dubai via an Emirates Airline.
Following the beginning of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) in June 2021, PMMC clarified in a statement that the bullion bars are owned by the Bank of Ghana.
PMMC harshly criticized Joseph Yamin and his group for interfering with a legitimate exercise, stating that the action might potentially damage Ghana's reputation on the global bullion market.
Joseph Yamin disputed the claims made on Ultimate FM's Cup of Tea, pointing out that according to his investigations, people other than his team had also taken Intel from the bullion truck, which continued to move until it parked at the National Assayer later that night.
Notable state organizations, such as the Ghana Revenue Authority's Customs Division, the National Investigations Bureau, and the Airport Police, were monitoring the shipment, he revealed.
The policemen of the PMMC and the Bank of Ghana Security Detail were fully at sea when they were questioned, according to video accounts that his team and the police have.
With no proof that the gold had come from the Bank of Ghana, he said the officers continued to fumble with the weight of the gold while it was in transit.
The boxes that were to be shipped were embossed and sealed, but the kilograms were not on them. It was unknown to the man conducting business on behalf of the Bank of Ghana," he recalled.
He said, "It is not about press releases," to host Julius Caesar Anadem. The issue pertains to documentation, and the Ghanaian bank that possesses the gold is failing to provide proof that the item belongs to them.
I would have anticipated that they would present documentation indicating that, for example, 20 kilograms of gold had left the Bank of Ghana, that PMMC was intended to complete the deal, and that the state was anticipating 50 billion dollars as a result. No documentation has arrived as of right now," he said.
Yamin alleged that another consignment of a hundred kilos had already left the country on a KLM flight.
He indicated that his Intel from the airport suggests that several other transactions, including the exportation of physical dollars, had been successfully carried out after the New Patriotic Party lost the elections some two weeks ago.
