Ghanaian highlife legend Agya Koo Nimo, at 94 years old, has expressed a heartfelt wish to share a stage with dancehall star Shatta Wale before his time comes to an end.

In a touching phone conversation shared in a video posted by media personality Kafui Dey on June 11, the music icon revealed his admiration for Shatta Wale and said it has long been his desire to meet and perform with the younger musician.

“I want to do one show before I die. I’m 94. It is my wish to always see you in person. So I’m happy I’ve had the opportunity to talk to you,” Agya Koo Nimo said.

An emotional Shatta Wale responded with gratitude and promised to visit the legendary musician soon.

“I will make time and come and see you. This call will make me come and see you because I’ve also been thinking about you and yearning to meet you,” he said.

An Intergenerational Musical Bond

The exchange has since drawn admiration across social media, with many praising the moment as a beautiful symbol of respect between two generations of Ghanaian music.

Agya Koo Nimo is revered for his role in preserving and promoting palmwine highlife music, a genre that remains a vital part of Ghana’s cultural heritage. His wish to perform with Shatta Wale, a modern-day icon in Afro-dancehall, highlights music’s power to connect the past and the present.

Calls for National Recognition

Following the viral video, President John Dramani Mahama has also called for a national celebration in honour of Agya Koo Nimo—while he is still alive.

“We watched the Palmwine music, and I asked if the king of Palmwine music was still alive and I hear he’s alive,” President Mahama said during the launch of the Black Star Experience on May 1.

“This is a man we must honour before he passes, because that was a genre of music that has become a part of our musical archive and our folklore.”

A Tribute Worth Giving Now

Many in the entertainment and cultural sectors are echoing the president’s call, urging that Agya Koo Nimo be celebrated not posthumously, but in his lifetime, for his profound contributions to Ghana’s musical and cultural identity.
