Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised President John Dramani Mahama for instituting the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, set to be observed on July 1, 2025.

Speaking during a courtesy call by the planning committee at his residence, the former President described the initiative as a worthwhile national gesture aimed at promoting civility, peace, and unity.

“All of us have to support this initiative. It is clearly a worthwhile initiative, that we have this one day where all of us come together to give thanks to the almighty for the many, many blessings he has bestowed upon us,” Akufo-Addo said.

He acknowledged Ghana’s resilience through political turmoil, highlighting that despite past military coups, the country has managed to avoid civil war and maintain relative stability in the region.

Although Akufo-Addo revealed he will be out of the country on July 1 due to prior commitments, he pledged his full moral support for the programme.

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, chairman of the planning committee, expressed gratitude for the endorsement, noting that the former president was enthusiastic about the idea and appreciative of President Mahama’s leadership in initiating the event.

“He welcomed us, endorsed the whole programme and thanked the President for the great initiative. He commended us and we are very grateful,” Ankrah said.

The National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving is expected to bring Ghanaians of all faiths together in a moment of national reflection and gratitude.
