The Constitution Review Committee (CRC) says it has entered a pivotal stage in its nationwide consultation process as it marks three months of intense public engagement aimed at reviewing Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

In a social media update on Saturday, Chairperson Prof. Henry Kwasi Prempeh announced that the committee has so far received more than 500 written submissions from individuals and organisations across the country. The CRC is gathering views to shape potential amendments to better reflect Ghana’s evolving democratic and governance needs.

The eight-member committee has already conducted 12 Thematic Stakeholder Engagements, five sessions with Identifiable Interest Groups, and eight Eminent Person Engagements. Thematic discussions have addressed key areas such as Lands and Natural Resources, Local Government, the Executive and Legislature, Judiciary, Gender and Youth, and Anti-Corruption.

Upcoming engagements will explore remaining themes like Chieftaincy and Citizenship. The committee also plans to meet with the National House of Chiefs and various religious bodies in the coming weeks.

As part of a broader public outreach strategy, zonal forums will be held in regional capitals including Accra, Tamale, Wa, Bolgatanga, Sunyani, Kumasi, Koforidua, Cape Coast, Takoradi, and Ho. A virtual town hall for Ghanaians in the diaspora is also scheduled.

In a bid to connect with younger citizens and the online community, the CRC will host a live X (formerly Twitter) Space on Monday, May 19, featuring social media influencer Kaly Jay.

High-profile figures already consulted include President John Dramani Mahama, former President J.A. Kufuor, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, former Speaker Prof. Mike Ocquaye, former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, and Prof. Kwamena Ahwoi.

The CRC’s ongoing work is seen as a significant opportunity to modernise Ghana’s Constitution and ensure it meets the aspirations of the citizenry in the current democratic era.
