
Madina, April 18, 2025 — A devastating fire tore through the Madina Redco Flats late Thursday night, destroying more than 150 structures and claiming the life of a young woman.
The fire broke out at approximately 11:15 p.m., swiftly engulfing 140 wooden structures and 20 metal containers, many of which were used as homes and small shops.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded within minutes. Firefighters from the Madina Fire Station arrived on scene in just two minutes, with support from Adenta, Legon, Abelemkpe, and Headquarters units. Despite their rapid deployment, the blaze was already raging uncontrollably.
Fire crews were able to confine the fire by 12:02 a.m. and completely extinguish it by 2:22 a.m.
Tragically, a young Nigerian woman known only as Beauty, believed to be in her early 20s, was trapped and killed in the blaze. Her charred remains were retrieved and handed over to the Madina Police for preservation and further investigation.
Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the damage and working to determine the cause of the fire, as displaced residents and business owners begin to count their losses.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many calling for improved safety measures and fire prevention strategies in densely populated and informal settlements.
