The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the closure of 21 basic primary schools in the Bimbagu Circuit of the Bunkprugu/Nakpanduri District in the North East Region due to rising tensions and violence in the area.
Dalukirir Jakper Jolly, Supervisor for the Bimbagu Central and East Circuits, confirmed that the decision was made following a directive from the Regional Director of Education.
The move comes after renewed clashes between the Nanik and Bimbagu communities on Friday, February 28, which resulted in the deaths of three Nanik residents, including a teacher from Walewale. The victims were burned beyond recognition in the attack.
According to eyewitnesses, heavily armed men stormed the community at dawn, firing gunshots and setting multiple houses on fire. Security personnel arrived two hours later, only to find widespread destruction, with homes and food supplies reduced to ashes.
Jakper Jolly explained that the closure is a precautionary measure to safeguard students and teachers from potential spillover violence. The situation remains tense as authorities work to restore calm in the area.
