The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has firmly denied reports circulating on social media that the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, was attacked during his visit to Bawku.
In a statement issued on April 25, 2025, and signed by the Director General of Public Relations, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, GAF clarified that two viral videos fueling the rumour are entirely false.
“GAF wishes to state that the contents of the said videos are false and should be treated with the contempt that they deserve,” the statement emphasized.
The Army Chief had embarked on an operational tour of Bawku on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. GAF confirmed that the visit was successful, with no incidents of violence or threats reported.
Tracking the Misinformation
The military further disclosed that investigations are underway to identify and prosecute the creators of the misleading videos. It warned that the spread of such fake news could worsen the already fragile security situation in Bawku.
“GAF once again wishes to caution bloggers, content creators, and the media at large to be circumspect in their reportage on GAF operations, especially in Bawku,” the statement read.
“Any deliberate misinformation and disinformation of the populace has the potential to worsen the security situation in the area.”
GAF called on the public to rely on verified information and official communication channels, especially when dealing with matters concerning national security.
