Ghanaian Firefighters Lack Insurance Coverage for On-Duty Injuries – GNFS

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has revealed that its personnel lack insurance coverage for injuries sustained while responding to emergencies.

According to GNFS Public Relations Officer, Alex King Nartey, firefighters must pay for their own medical expenses when injured and later apply for a reimbursement, a process that is often slow and uncertain.

"We don’t have any health insurance. Firefighters use their own resources for medical care and later apply for refunds. If they don’t have money at that moment, they have to borrow," Nartey explained.

His comments follow criticism from Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, after a fire outbreak at Adum in Kumasi on March 22. The fire, which engulfed a commercial building, caused extensive damage, destroying shops and goods worth thousands of cedis.

During a site visit, Dr. Amoakohene expressed frustration, questioning why a fire tender at the scene appeared to be empty. His reaction sparked debate, with Nartey suggesting that instead of public criticism, a simple thank you would have sufficed.

He emphasized that despite the challenges and risks firefighters face, they continue to serve the nation without proper medical support.

The GNFS has yet to announce any steps to address this lack of insurance coverage for its personnel.
