Gold deposits have been discovered in seven out of the 15 District Assemblies and Municipalities in Ghana’s Upper East Region, presenting new economic opportunities for the area.
Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, disclosed this development during a press interaction at the proposed site for the Bolgatanga Airport on March 29, 2025.
"This region has suddenly discovered mineral deposits. Out of the 15 district assemblies, about seven have these deposits, which presents a significant business opportunity," he stated.
Infrastructure Needed to Support Mining
Minister Atanga stressed the need for improved infrastructure to support mining activities, particularly safe and efficient gold transportation to national markets.
"Once mining begins, there will be a need for quicker transport to move the gold to national markets without the risk of armed robberies," he explained.
He also emphasized the strategic importance of the Bolgatanga Airport project, which would facilitate trade, investment, and regional connectivity, positioning the Upper East as a key gateway to Burkina Faso and Togo.
Call for Stakeholder Support
The minister called on stakeholders to support efforts to develop the airport and enhance regional infrastructure, ensuring the gold discovery translates into tangible economic benefits for the region.
