The Government of Ghana is actively negotiating with a strategic investor for the revamp and potential takeover of AirtelTigo, now rebranded as AT, in a bid to reposition the telecom operator and bolster competition within the sector.
Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, disclosed the development during a stakeholder engagement with telecom industry CEOs on Friday, May 30, 2025.
“We have given a 60-day window for the completion of negotiations,” the Minister announced.
“By the end of Q3, we aim to roll out improved services from AT.”
The proposed partnership is expected to inject much-needed capital and technical expertise into AT, which has struggled since being taken over by the state in 2021. The goal is to strengthen its competitiveness and service quality in Ghana's dynamic telecommunications landscape.
In addition, the Minister revealed that Cabinet has approved the allocation of new spectrum to major telecom operators including Telecel and MTN. This move aims to expand infrastructure, boost connectivity, and enhance service delivery across the country.
“Entities like AT and Telecel, which are spectrum-constrained, will have access to additional resources via the NGIC platform. MTN is also welcome to participate,” he noted.
These developments form part of a broader government strategy to stimulate innovation, expand network coverage, and improve digital inclusion for all Ghanaians.
