The Environment Sub-Committee of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has endorsed the potential of Zoomlion Ghana Limited’s self-loading tricycles, skip compactor trucks, and skip containers to revolutionise waste management across Greater Kumasi.
During a recent inspection tour of Zoomlion’s logistics hubs in Tema and Accra, Committee Chairman Abraham Boadi described the equipment as a strategic asset for improving sanitation, particularly in areas difficult to access with larger waste trucks.
“With five sub-metros in the Ashanti Region, allocating this equipment appropriately would be highly beneficial,” Boadi stated. He revealed plans to engage the KMA General Assembly to secure implementation support for the initiative.
The 14-member KMA delegation visited key assembly points including the JSA Logistics Warehouse, JA Plant Pool, and the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP) at Adjen Kotoku, where Zoomlion is assembling and preparing the equipment for deployment.
Metro Environmental Health Officer Kwaku Poku, who is also Secretary to the Sub-Committee, described the visit as “enlightening,” praising the self-loading tricycles as ideal for congested areas like markets and dense residential zones.
“This trip has been very fruitful. The impact this logistics can have on Kumasi’s waste challenges is very promising,” he noted.
Wiafe Akenten Oduro, Senior Public Health Engineer at the KMA Waste Management Department, applauded Zoomlion’s ongoing investments, noting their efforts have not only improved sanitation nationwide but also generated meaningful employment opportunities.
“Without Zoomlion’s interventions, many Ghanaians might still be unemployed. Their commitment to sanitation and job creation deserves national support,” Oduro said.
He concluded with a call for citizen participation, urging residents to take personal responsibility in maintaining clean environments.
“Waste management is a shared responsibility. Let’s all do our part to keep Kumasi and Ghana clean,” he emphasised.
