A group of ward and branch executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Lower Manya Krobo Constituency, calling themselves The Grassroots of the NDC, is demanding the immediate withdrawal of the President’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), John Atter Matey.

Mr. Matey, who currently serves as the NDC Constituency Chairman, was recently nominated by President John Dramani Mahama for the MCE role. However, the group has strongly rejected the nomination, describing it as a betrayal of the loyalty, dedication, and democratic will of the party’s grassroots base.

At a press conference held at the party office in Nuaso, convenor and branch chairman, Odonkor David Dei, voiced the group’s frustration, insisting that the nomination ignored long-serving and qualified party members.

“We have competent men and women who are widely known within the party—people who understand the structure, are unifiers, loyal, and have served the party faithfully for over three decades. These individuals applied for the same position, but were completely disregarded,” he said.

Dei further accused the party’s national leadership of sidelining the grassroots and prioritising inexperience and arrogance over commitment and unity.

“We want the world to know that the choice of the people has been denied by the President and the national leadership. Loyalty and long service have been thrown into the dustbin, paving the way for inexperience,” he lamented.

The group has vowed to continue pressing for the withdrawal of Mr. Matey’s nomination, urging the party’s leadership to reconsider the decision in favour of grassroots representation and fairness.
