Minority Raises Alarm Over Quarterly Electricity Tariff Increases

The Minority in Parliament has voiced concerns over a possible increase in electricity tariffs every three months under the current government’s policies.

During a press briefing on March 13, 2025, in response to the 2025 budget, the Minority criticized the government for failing to address the rising cost of electricity. They noted that the budget did not introduce any measures to ease the financial burden on citizens.

“Unfortunately, these issues were not addressed in the economic policy. Those hoping for relief from rising electricity costs were instead disappointed to learn that tariffs will now be reviewed quarterly, with no government intervention to mitigate the impact,” they stated.

Additionally, the Minority accused the government of secretly removing subsidies on gas prices, raising the weighted average cost of gas from $7.8 to $8.4 per MMBtu. They argued that this decision would drive up energy costs further, worsening the financial strain on households and businesses.

“Not only will energy prices rise, but they will do so at a higher base rate from now on. There is no hope of resetting energy pricing,” they added.
