Accra, April 16, 2025 — Chair of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders in South Africa, Benjamin Kofi Quashie, has expressed unwavering confidence in the NDC’s ability to defeat the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in any future election.
Speaking in an interview on Joy News, Mr. Quashie pointed to the NDC’s strong post-2024 approval ratings and performance since returning to power as clear indicators of public confidence in the party’s leadership and direction.
“I have said that anytime, any day, and in any election held between the NPP with Dr. Bawumia as their candidate, and the NDC, we would beat them hands down,” he asserted.
Post-Mahama Leadership Should Not Be a Distraction
When asked about possible successors to President John Mahama within the NDC, Quashie urged party members to remain focused on delivering on the government’s mandate rather than becoming preoccupied with succession politics.
He acknowledged speculation around the current Vice President — the first woman to hold both that position and the role of Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast — as a frontrunner for future leadership, suggesting her historic rise could continue. However, he cautioned that internal debates should not distract from governance priorities.
“He [Mahama] has still not completed forming his government. The party should not engage in such discussions but rather rally behind President Mahama to succeed,” he emphasized.
Potential NDC Leaders and Electoral Prospects
Quashie also addressed other names that have emerged as potential future leaders of the NDC, including:
Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Education
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs
John Asiedu Nketia, NDC National Chairman
He maintained that, based on the 2024 election outcome and current public sentiment, any of these figures would defeat Dr. Bawumia in a head-to-head contest.
“The NDC is doing far better, and everybody in Ghana believes we are heading in the right direction. We should stay focused and forget about the naysayers,” he concluded.
Rallying Behind the Present
With President Mahama’s administration still in its early stages, Quashie called for unity and discipline within the NDC ranks, emphasizing that the best way forward is to deliver results and earn continued public trust.
