The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has announced that it is actively monitoring compliance with a 21-day ultimatum issued to all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region to remove unauthorized billboards erected along road medians and highways.
Managing Director of the NRSA, Abraham Amaliba, disclosed that 29 assemblies have received official notices directing them to dismantle billboards deemed hazardous to pedestrian safety or distracting to motorists.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, April 30, 2024, Amaliba warned that the Authority will pursue legal action against any MMDA that fails to comply within the stipulated period.
“I have written compliance notices to 29 municipal and district assemblies in Greater Accra. They are responsible for granting licenses to advertising companies and for erecting these billboards—so they must remove them.
“We are counting the 21 days. If they don’t act, we will enforce the law by taking them to court,” he cautioned.
The NRSA’s directive follows mounting public concerns over the growing number of billboards obstructing road visibility and posing safety risks, especially near pedestrian footbridges.
Amaliba emphasized that the campaign is part of broader efforts to improve road safety and ensure that public infrastructure such as footbridges serve their intended protective function.
