Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate promotion of all eligible deputy directors within the Ghana Education Service (GES).
The directive, revealed on Thursday, April 24, comes in response to mounting concerns over stalled career progression among education professionals and follows a strike threat from the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), scheduled for April 30.
Speaking at the launch of a sanitary pad distribution initiative for schoolgirls, the Minister assured that the lack of office space would not hinder the elevation of qualified personnel.
“President John Dramani Mahama has directed the GES and the Ministry of Education to give all those deputy directors a legitimate promotion. And even without office, they will still serve in their capacities as directors of GES,” Haruna Iddrisu stated.
The Minister emphasized that the move reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the long-standing frustrations of educators across the country.
Sanitary Pad Distribution Initiative
The promotion directive was announced during the launch of a new “Free Pad” initiative aimed at supporting menstrual hygiene among schoolgirls. The programme forms part of President Mahama’s broader agenda to ensure gender equality and remove barriers that hinder girls’ education.
In his maiden State of the Nation Address, President Mahama highlighted menstrual health as a significant issue affecting school attendance and academic performance among girls, particularly in underserved communities.
The sanitary pad distribution initiative is designed to:
• Alleviate the financial burden on families
• Improve school attendance rates among girls
• Support girls’ health and overall well-being
• Create a more inclusive and equitable educational environment
The government says the intervention aligns with its vision to ensure that no child—regardless of gender or background—is left behind in the pursuit of quality education.
