A devastating road accident at Tankokrom in Takoradi on Friday, June 6, has claimed the life of Isaac Bonaray, affectionately known as Ike Bonaray, the popular morning show host of Max FM in Enchi.
The incident occurred just as residents were preparing for the Eid Al-Adha celebrations. Bonaray was fatally run over by a faulty timber truck that reversed uncontrollably into a trotro (mini-bus) in which he was a passenger.
According to eyewitness accounts, the timber truck—loaded with lumber and headed toward the Fijai-Cape Coast route—lost control and crashed into the trotro traveling from Takoradi to Kojokrom.
Trotro driver Nkansah Kyerematen recounted the horror:
“Just before reaching the Tanokrom Pipeano Traffic Light, the timber truck began reversing toward us. I tried to avoid it, hitting the vehicle behind me in the process. My mate managed to remove the door so passengers could escape, but sadly, Isaac Bonaray, who attempted to flee, was run over and killed.”
Emergency services from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Police responded promptly. Bonaray’s body was recovered and sent to the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital morgue. The timber truck was later towed from the scene.
The tragedy is particularly heart-wrenching, as Bonaray had married just a week ago, recently moved into his new home in Apowa, and was living with his wife and their two-month-old baby.
Beyond broadcasting, Bonaray was deeply involved in sports development. He served as Chairman of the Aowin Municipal Football Association and was a member of the Western Regional Football Association’s Executive Council.
His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the media and sports communities, with tributes pouring in for a man described by many as vibrant, dedicated, and community-spirited.
