Transport operators in Ghana, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), have withdrawn their earlier decision to raise transport fares by 20% starting March 20, 2025.
In a statement issued on March 18, the groups explained that their decision followed a meeting with the Minister of Transport to discuss industry concerns. They noted that there is currently no significant rise in operational costs to justify an increase in fares at this time.
“We have, therefore, agreed to maintain the existing fares and allow the Government to settle before any further negotiations,” the statement read.
The transport operators reaffirmed their commitment to providing reliable and safe services to passengers and agreed to reassess the situation should economic conditions change.
Additionally, they emphasized that only GPRTU and GRTCC have the authority to negotiate and announce transport fares in Ghana. The public was urged to disregard any unauthorized fare increase announcements.
This decision brings relief to commuters, who were anticipating higher costs in daily transportation.
