Ghana’s former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who served as Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and Member of Parliament for Tamale Central.
The visit took place at the late minister’s family home in Tamale, where Dr. Bawumia was accompanied by several Members of Parliament and former parliamentary candidates from the NPP.
A video circulating on social media shows Dr. Bawumia signing the book of condolence in a moment of solemn reflection. In his tribute, he described the late Dr. Mohammed as “a dedicated public servant whose contributions to national development transcended party lines.”
Dr. Bawumia also expressed his personal sorrow at the loss, stating, “Ghana has lost a patriotic son. Dr. Murtala Mohammed was committed to the progress of our nation, and his absence will be deeply felt.”
The former Vice President’s visit was marked by a respectful and solemn atmosphere, highlighting the late minister’s ability to garner admiration across political divides.
According to sources present, Dr. Bawumia’s presence “underscored the NPP’s recognition of Dr. Mohammed’s service and the shared grief of the nation.”
Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed passed away earlier this week after a short illness. He was widely respected for his role in advancing science and environmental policy in Ghana, and for his strong representation of the people of Tamale Central.
