Gims Vibes: Emerging Afro-Soul artist blends healing, identity and global ambition

Gims Vibes, born Michael Mawutor Ananga Kofi, is steadily carving out a unique space within Ghana’s evolving music landscape, one that blends emotional depth with cultural identity and a growing global outlook.

Hailing from Akosombo, a town known for its calm and scenic environment, the artist draws deeply from his surroundings. He describes the setting as both “serene and ambient,” an influence that naturally feeds into the reflective tone of his music and the visual direction of his brand.

But beyond the studio, Gims Vibes represents a layered professional journey. A registered nurse by training, with additional experience in hospitality management, he also works as a social media manager for Akosombo Dam City Entertainment. This combination of structure and creativity has shaped his approach to music, not just as an art form, but as a business that requires strategy and long-term vision.

Finding purpose through performance

His journey into music began in 2020 with early demo recordings such as Give to Me, Odo, and Dance for Me. Like many independent artists, he faced initial challenges, particularly in financing recordings and promotion. However, it was his experience performing at events that ultimately defined his path. “Whenever I perform at events, I feel fulfilled and satisfied. That is when I realized music is my path,” he said. That clarity has since guided his steady rise, shaping a career built on patience, consistency, and self-awareness rather than haste.

A sound rooted in emotion and self-awareness

Gims Vibes’ sound sits at the intersection of R&B, Soul, Highlife and Afrobeats, forming a smooth Afro-fusion style that prioritizes both melody and message. Influenced by artists such as Efya, King Promise, Amaarae, Usher, and Sam Smith, his music is designed to resonate emotionally with listeners.

“I want my music to be a safe space, a sanctuary where listeners can feel comfort and strength,” he explained.

His creative process begins with a soulful melody, often rooted in R&B, layered with the rhythmic elements of Highlife or Afrobeats. From there, he builds each track around storytelling, drawing from personal experiences, shared realities and imagination.

This approach is evident in his recent releases, including Sacrifice, Own This, Blacklist and Fire Burning. The songs explore themes of self-love, emotional growth and the importance of setting boundaries.

“‘Sacrifice’ captures the moment you realise letting go is not a loss, but a win for your soul,” he noted, describing it as his most personal work. Meanwhile, Blacklist reflects his current mindset, centred on self-preservation and authenticity.

Growing a global audience

While still in the early stages of his career, Gims Vibes is already seeing his music travel beyond Ghana. He has built a growing listener base in countries such as Indonesia, the United States and the United Kingdom, largely through organic digital reach.

For him, this signals more than just exposure. It represents validation that his message connects across cultures.

“My journey has been a slow burn, focused on consistency and growth,” he said. “Success for me right now is building a strong digital presence and seeing my music resonate globally.”

He also emphasised the importance of understanding the business side of music, particularly for independent artists. According to him, knowledge of copyright, publishing and ownership is essential for long-term success in the industry.

Looking ahead

Gims Vibes is currently working on new singles including Game Over, Let It Go, Dripping, and Feeling Myself, which will form part of an upcoming EP. The project continues his exploration of self-confidence, emotional freedom and personal growth.

Beyond recording, he is focused on expanding his brand, building collaborations and preparing for live performances that will connect him more directly with audiences.

He also has his sights set on working with both local and international acts, noting that the right collaboration is one built on shared energy and creative alignment.

As he continues to evolve, Gims Vibes remains committed to authenticity, a value he believes is essential not just for his own journey, but for the next generation of artists.

“Guard your uniqueness. The things that make you different are what will take you to the world,” he advised.

With a sound rooted in emotion and a vision that stretches beyond borders, Gims Vibes is positioning himself not just as an artist, but as a voice of connection, one that turns personal experiences into music that resonates far beyond where it begins. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQkqzmgc1sw&list=OLAK5uy_nhLUkR4D2WeavOtnao2XYPYkeRuD1dv7g
