Lady Dorcas: From Akyem Muoso to a higher calling through gospel music

Born Dorcas Dankwah in Akyem Muoso in Ghana’s Eastern Region, rising gospel musician Lady Dorcas is steadily making her mark in the local gospel scene. With a voice rooted in faith and a message anchored in hope, she is on a mission to use music as a tool for ministry and healing.

The birth of “Lady Dorcas”

The name Lady Dorcas was not chosen at random. “The ‘Lady’ was given to me by a pastor friend after I ministered at a programme,” she recalls. The name has since come to represent grace, purpose, and her calling to serve God through music.

From humble beginnings to purpose

Growing up in Akyem Muoso, Lady Dorcas’s early life was shaped by both challenges and faith. “Looking at where I’m coming from and where God has brought me, I can only say God has been good,” she says. Her passion for gospel music began seven years ago when she started writing her own songs, inspired by her personal relationship with God.

Today, that passion has led to her first-ever album, which she describes as “by grace alone.”

A sound inspired by faith

Lady Dorcas’s musical style blends worship and uplifting gospel rhythms. She draws inspiration from leading Ghanaian gospel artists such as Diana Hopeson, Obaapa Christy, and Diana Hamilton. “Their way of coming out with songs actually shaped my sound,” she explains.

Her songwriting process, she says, is guided by quiet moments of reflection and prayer. “I get songs whenever I’m alone. When it happens, I record the tune on my phone and later write it down in my music book.”

Faith through challenges

Like many emerging gospel musicians, Lady Dorcas has faced financial and logistical challenges in launching her first album. Despite the difficulties, she remains grateful. “This is my first album, and coming out has not been easy—but this far by grace,” she says.

A message of hope

Through her songs, Lady Dorcas seeks to remind listeners that faith in God brings restoration and peace. “All hope is not lost. With God, all things are possible,” she says. Her music, she believes, is a channel through which people can experience the power and presence of God.

Balancing work and ministry

Apart from her music, Lady Dorcas works as an Immigration Officer. The role, she notes, has helped her understand people better. “It helps me meet different kinds of people all the time,” she says. She manages her dual responsibilities by dedicating her studio work to her off-duty hours.

Looking ahead

With her debut album marking a new phase in her journey, Lady Dorcas hopes to release more music and organise gospel events in the years ahead. “God willing, every year my audience should expect new releases and programmes,” she shares.

To young musicians, she offers this advice: “Don’t lose hope if help is not coming. There’s a time and season for everything under the sun. God’s time is the best—keep on keeping on, one day the tables will turn in your favour.”

Lady Dorcas’s story from Akyem Muoso to the gospel stage is a reminder that faith, patience, and dedication can turn humble beginnings into lasting impact.
